Learning-for-Life Navigators
Winterfest brings the opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, share ideas, compete against other post and crews, and to have fun. The conference included competitive events such as First Responder, Fire Fighter, Mock Trial, Law Enforcement, Engineering, and many more. There were also extracurricular events such as snow skiing, shopping, museums and other tourist attractions, located in the Great Smoky Mountains. A plan for next year’s event already is in progress. So mark your calendar for next year's Annual Winterfest, 2009.

Smiley Health & Science Explorers and Harris County Sheriff Department Law Enforcement Explorers attended the Winterfest 2008 Conference in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We had a total of 8 students and three adults that attend this year's event. Posts competed in the Basic First Aid and te Law Enforcement competition. We are looking forward to competing in next year's event with Explorers all over the United States.
ANOTHER FIRST FOR HOUSTON’S FIRST
I am delighted to report that the Decon Disaster Drill we hosted on Wednesday evening was a success for all involved. Members of the team were amazed at how quickly and efficiently we handled 122 participants (Nursing students and The Boy Scouts of America) who arrived via vans and buses.
We set a record for the City of Houston, in handling 122 victims while participating in a facility –specific drill, (that is, not a city-wide drill). SJMC is the first hospital in Houston to have a facility drill that involved that number of victims. Join me in sending special recognition to Mike South, Brenda Pinon, Leanne Bunny-Johnson, Farida Jivan, Theresa Sampson, Dinah Alfafara, our food services team, EVS, Security, and the entire Decon team for assisting with this record-breaking event.
