NYLTNotes
Sam Houston Area Council
Welcome to NYLT!
Congratulations on being selected by your troop to attend National Youth Leadership Training. This 6-day course will provide you with new leadership skills and resources that will help you in many ways. You’ll be getting the latest and best leadership training possible. The experience should be exciting for all of us.
In order to be sure things go smoothly we do need your help. Please read through this newsletter and be sure you complete the required tasks and prepare for the course properly. We look forward to having you on the course!
Course Orientation Meeting
Orientation is mandatory. Please bring a parent or guardian so that they may be informed as well. Orientation for both summer courses will be held on Sunday, May 18, 2008, at 1:30 PM and conclude at 4:00 PM. Plan to arrive at 1:00 PM so that you have time to check you in before the meeting starts. It is particularly important that you read these notes, follow instructions, and make sure that your paperwork and payments are sent to the Cockrell Scout Center on time. The address is: Sam Houston Area Council, ATTN. NYLT, 2225 North Loop West, Houston, Texas 77008.
Participant Paperwork Requirements
As with any event we do require some paperwork from you before the course starts (15 days in advance), but the good news is that there are just a few simple items. Every participant must have the following (absolutely no exceptions):
:
1. Medical Form – A Class II medical form must be completed and signed by a doctor within the prescribed time period. A copy rather than original is recommended.
2. Resource Questionnaire – This form includes all information we should know about physical or dietary restrictions necessary to accommodate medical or religious issues. This form also provides the staff with information used to group the participants so that the maximum benefit is received from the course.
3. All Fees Paid in Full – The Council must have your full fee at least 15 days prior to the start of the course in order to be able to have funds available to buy all food and supplies needed to host a successful course.
4. Medication Form – This form should be completed and signed by the parent, listing all medicines the Scout may need during this course; either prescribed or over the counter. All participants are required to submit this form even if no medicines are needed.
5. Talent Release Form - Since we routinely take photographs for video presentations, please complete this form.
NOTE: We will not allow anyone to participate on the course without all the above.
Course Location and Arrival/Pick Up Times
The course will be held at Kuester Training Area at Camp Strake. The Council web site has maps and directions. Just see www.samhoustonbsa.org and look under Camping / Camp Strake to find complete information.
The course will start at 12:00 PM on Sunday. (June 8th or 22nd) Participants should plan to arrive between 11:30 AM and 12:00 PM in order to be there on time. Please do not arrive before 11:30 AM, as we will not be ready to receive any participants yet.
The course will finish by 5:00 PM on Friday. (June 13th or 27th) Parents should plan to arrive between 4:30 and 5:00 PM. Please do not be late, as staff will depart for home directly after the course and no one will be allowed to remain at camp.
NYLT Course Policies
We do have a few policies that you should know and be aware of:
1. Fee Refunds – We understand things can happen that cause a participant to withdraw from the course. However, refunds or a balance transfers to a future course, and will only be discussed if the withdraw is due to factors beyond the participant’s or guardian’s control. The Council will assess the reasons for a withdrawal and make a fair ruling. Refunds might be available at Council discretion.
2. Equipment Damage – Should Council equipment or property be damaged by participants during the course, where damage occurs from other than normal or expected use, it shall be the responsibility of the participant (s) involved (and their guardians) to pay for the cost of the damage.
3. Course Completion – To successfully complete the course and receive the certificate and patch, a participant must attend the full course including closing ceremony. Anyone leaving the course early will not be eligible for completion.
4. Medication – All medications must be labeled with participant’s name, medication name, dosage & schedule for medication. Send only enough medication for the course duration. Use Medication Form. Each participant may keep inhalers and sting kits.
Recommended Equipment Checklist
The Council will provide all the food, course supplies, and patrol equipment needed for the course (e.g. stoves, cook gear, etc). We will be sleeping in wall tents similar to summer camp most of the week, so we recommend a ground cloth and a cot for comfortable sleeping. One night you will backpack to an overnight camp, so please note you’ll need to borrow and bring one of your troop’s tents to backpack a short way.
Scouts will be properly uniformed during the entire course: in activity uniform (Class B) the majority of the time as well as in full field uniform (Class A) for morning flag raising, dinner, and special ceremonies. Caps are permitted, but they must be BSA-issued or plain (no advertising or company logos). T-shirts are similarly constrained, either BSA-issued or plain. It is recommended that each Scout bring at least 3 pair of green Scout socks to permit a daily change of socks with alternate day washing and drying. Daily changes (6 days) of underwear and t-shirts are also recommended for purposes of personal hygiene (odor) and heat rash.
Please leave at home audio or electronic gear (pagers, cell phones, games, etc.) and any food, snacks, or drinks.
Contacting Your Scout at Camp
The emergency phone number for Camp Strake is 936-756-7411 or 1-877-272-2267; identify yourself and son as being in NYLT, state your emergency, ask that your son contact you, and leave a call back number.
