Youth Protection Training

For the purposes of day camp, resident camp, summer camp, and winter camp in the state of Texas, Scout leaders should complete Youth Protection Training via the MyScouting portal. If you are having trouble logging on, please call the BSA's National Web Help Desk at myscouting@netbsa.org or 1-972-580-2267.

Youth Protection training is designed to help you keep our youth safe from abuse. You will learn the Boy Scouts of America’s Youth Protection Guidelines, signs of abuse, and how to report suspected abuse. After each section of material, you will answer questions about that section’s topic. This course must be completed by all registered leaders, and is highly recommended for parents and other adults working with youth.

Effective June 1, 2010: New Youth Protection Policy

To increase awareness of youth protection and to create even greater barriers to abuse than already exist today in Scouting, the Boy Scouts of America is implementing several important changes to further enhance its Youth Protection policies.

  • Youth Protection training is required for all registered volunteers.
  • New leaders are required to take Youth Protection training before they submit an application for registration. The certificate of completion for this training must be submitted at the time application is made and before volunteer service with youth begins.
  • Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
  • NOTE:  The Youth Protection Quiz (training code Y00), formerly available  via MyScouting, is no longer a valid course.  Adults with this code will be required to retake Youth Protection Training prior to recharter.

How to Complete Youth Protection Training

Scouters may complete this training module through the "MyScouting" portal.  First-time users to MyScouting must set up an account and password.  From the MyScouting.org portal, click on E-Learning and take the Youth Protection training.  Download a copy of the Child Abuse Reporting Procedures for details on reporting procedures in Sam Houston Area Council.

New Leaders

You do not have to be a registered member or have a member ID to take Youth Protection training.  Set up an account as above.  Upon completion, you may print a certificate of completion to submit with your BSA adult volunteer application.  When your volunteer application is approved, you will receive a BSA membership card which includes your membership ID number.  After you receive your membership card, log back into MyScouting, click on My Profile, and update the system by inputting your member ID.  This will link your Youth Protection training records, and any other online training you have taken in MyScouting, to your BSA membership.

Troubleshooting

If you have problems setting up an account or cannot log in, follow the directions on Frequently Asked Questions found below the log-in screen for assistance.  If troubleshooting tips fail, contact the BSA National Web Help Desk at myscouting@netbsa.org or 1-972-580-2267.

BUG ALERT: A number of users have reported that they are unable to create accounts for the e-learning system using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.0 (the very latest version) because an image is superimposed over text fields, preventing them from entering data. National is currently working on a newer version of the account creation/management interface that will not have this problem.

In the meantime, these users may be able to complete the form if they use their "tab" key to navigate among text fields. Otherwise, they will need to use a different Web browser (Netscape, FireFox, or even an older version of IE) to create an account.

Texas Youth Camp Safety Act

  • Summer camp (Boy Scouts)
  • Winter camp (Boy Scouts)
  • Summer Adventure Camp (Cub Scouts/Webelos Scouts)
  • Day Camp (Tiger Cubs/Cub Scouts/Webelos Scouts)
