Every Scout should learn the value of hard work and earning their own way. The popcorn sale is the perfect opportunity to teach this valuable life lesson and fund the most exciting year of Scouting ever. The council does all the pre-work to set up the sale, eliminating the need for units to research opportunities, calculate returns, create sales and promotional materials, manage a relationship with a vendor, etc. The popcorn sale is not just about selling popcorn...It’s also about promoting Scouting!

Hundreds of thousands of dollars go back to the Scouting program in the Sam Houston Area Council as a result of the annual popcorn sale. 73% of all dollars collected during the sale support local Scouting. The popcorn sale is a way for a Scout to support his or her way through the various activities during the year. There are three options to sell popcorn: traditional take order sales, sell online to friends and family out of town and show-n-sell. For more information, contact your district popcorn kernel or district executive.

Why Sell?

• Increase your unit and council income – 73% stays in the local area.
• Meet annual fundraising goals faster than ever before
• Scouts pay for their way for various programs (e.g., summer camp, dues uniforms).
• Scouts learn life lessons by earning their own way.
Loads of incentives motivate Scouts to sell.
• Ordering has never been easier than with the Trail's End App.
Videos and resources help Scouts learn how to be successful.

Ways to Sell Popcorn

There are three options to sell popcorn: traditional take order sales, sell online to friends and family out of town and show-and-sell (and wagon sales). All sales count towards prizes.

1. Take Order Sales

Scouts go door-to-door with the take order form. Sales run from after the unit kick-off (after August 11, 2020 through October 30, 2020). Customers can write their order on the form. Scouts should collect the money when the popcorn is ordered (checks should be made out to the unit).  Customers can also place their order on the Trail's End App (credit cards are accepted with no fees). Popcorn will be picked up by the unit representative on November 21, 2020.

2. Online Popcorn Sales

Selling online is the best way to sell to friends and family who live far away. Online sales count toward Scout rewards including the $650 club, and scholarship program. Participants can send emails to friends and family asking them to purchase products online. The email includes a link allowing them to begin shopping right away. Customers can pay with a credit card, and the products are shipped directly to the customer, CONTACT FREE!  The advantage of online sales is that Scouts don't have to collect money or deliver products. Online sales run from April 1st to December 31st.

Online Direct Sales
Place orders for online products in the app.  Pick the products, take payment (credit card only) and products ship directly to your customers.  You can also share your page with customers via email, text and social media.

Online Direct Sales Promotions

  • Free Shipping Weekend - July 3-5.
  • Units Earn 5% of Online Direct Sales as an Amazon Gift Card - July 1 -1 August 15th
  • Scouts Earn Double Points for Amazon Gift Cards on every Online Direct Sale

Due to the Covid-19, Scout Fair coupon book sales ended early. As a result, Trail's End is opening online sales early this year for Scouts who would like to continue fundraising.

How do Scouts sign up for online sales?
For New Scouts:
  1. Visit www.Trails-End.com
  2. Click “Register” in the top right-hand corner
  3. Select “Scout/Parent” as the type of account you would like to register
  4. Select whether you are under or over the age of 13
  5. Continue to complete your registration following the instructions provided with your unit information

Returning Scouts:

  1. Visit www.Trails-End.com
  2. Click “Sign In” in the top right-hand corner
  3. Username and password from previous years selling.

Now the fun part of creating your personalized Scout profile begins with the dashboard under the Manage Page TAB.

To share your page with friends and family via email and social media, click on the appropriate icon from your dashboard or from the navigation on the left-hand side – Tip: don’t just send once but continue posting and sharing throughout the sales campaign to reach more people.

Another idea is to send an email directly to each person you are connecting with and sharing your scout code for them to purchase that way! The personalized touch will often get more responses.

Note: The online sales are national and reflect different prices than what you may see. The products will vary a bit, for example, the Unbelievable Butter has 24 bags instead of 18. There are also bundles for items and items not available locally like trail mix!

Share your Scouts sales goal today and connect with your out of town friends and family.

3. Show-n-Sell and Wagon Sales

Show-n-sell is similar to take order sales, except Scouts have the popcorn in hand to sell to customers. All units are eligible to participate if they agree to the terms stated in the commitment order form. Packs, troops and crews can request permission to sell in front of a retail store or chartered organization. Show-n-sell should not replace traditional take order sales. Units can customize their initial order ($2,500 minimum) to meet their needs or they may still choose one of our pre-set bundle options.  Order and sell multiple bundles to increase unit profits!  Wagon sales is another great way of selling for Scouts.  It's a combination of the show-n-sell and take order methods.  The Scout takes actual product door to door in their neighborhoods to sell and is like a show-n-sell table on wheels.  There is little risk as any unsold popcorn is rolled into traditional, take order sales.

Show-n-sell popcorn is picked up by the unit representative on August 15, 2020. For pick up times and location, contact the district popcorn kernelWeekly replenishment orders are available with no minimum requirements starting on August 20, 2020. Replenishment orders must be placed each week on Sunday by 11:59 pm.

Hero Donation

The hero donation allows customers to support the military, first responders, veterans' organizations and Scouting at the same time. Customers can choose to donate $50 or $30 worth of popcorn to men and women in the military, first responders, their families and veterans' organizations. There are no shipping and handling charges associated with hero donations. Over 2,000 tons of popcorn treats have been shipped to hundreds of locations around the world! Hero donations count toward Scout rewards.

Since customers who purchase a hero donation don't receive the product in exchange for payment, the purchase should be 100% tax-deductible. As always, recommend that the customer check the tax laws with their tax professional, as tax laws often change.
